Migration
12x12 in., Digital Painting, 2020
This series of images work together as a subtle activist approach relating to the journey immigrants experience. The monarch butterfly is commonly used as a symbol of peaceful migration in the immigration movement. For this series, I wanted to incorporate other types of butterflies to emphasize the diversity of immigrants. The butterflies are resting on the plants and flowers, in my mind, making them symbols of allies representing support to immigrants. The three images each display a vintage map in the background of Mexico, California, or both. Growing up in San Diego, although I am not undocumented, I was often exposed to and experienced discrimination for my appearance and for speaking Spanish. Migration intends for its viewers to be open to the beauty of immigration. Butterflies deserve to be free and so do we.
